Final Grade Calculator
Determine the score you need on your final exam to achieve your desired course grade.
How the Final Grade Calculator Works
Your overall course grade is typically determined by multiple graded components, such as homework, quizzes, projects, participation, exams, and a final exam. Each component contributes a specific percentage toward your final course grade.
Before you take your final exam, your current grade is based only on the coursework you’ve already completed. The portion of your grade assigned to the final exam is still unearned, so your current average is calculated using the completed categories only.
To determine the score you need on your final exam, this calculator combines three pieces of information:
- Your current course grade
- The grade you want to earn overall
- The percentage your final exam is worth
Using these values, it calculates the minimum exam score required to reach your target course grade.
Formula
Required Final Exam Score = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (100% − Final Exam Weight)) ÷ Final Exam Weight
This equation works by calculating how much of your desired overall grade still needs to come from the final exam after accounting for the portion you’ve already earned throughout the course.
Example
Suppose you currently have an 88% in the class, your instructor says the final exam counts for 20% of your overall grade, and you’d like to finish the course with a 90%.
After entering those values into the calculator, you’ll instantly see the minimum score you need on the final exam to achieve your goal.
Whether you’re trying to maintain an A, improve your GPA, or simply see what’s possible before exam day, this calculator provides a quick and accurate estimate without requiring you to work through the math yourself.
